When people think about their heating and cooling systems they don’t generally think of the air filter. It’s not a part that needs to be tightened or lubricated, and there is no switch that turns it on or off.
Yet the air filter is a lot more important than you may think. You should also know that if you neglect to make sure it stays clean, your HVAC system may be prone to failure.
What it does
When you were a child, did your parents ever use a box fan to cool your bedroom or living room? If they placed the fan in the window, you likely noticed that when the fan was removed, the screen would be filthy. The square, dirt and dust collection would have been the exact size and shape of the fan.
In some ways, you can think of your HVAC system as being the fan and your air filter as being the screen. The air filter’s job is to remove pollen, dust spores, pet dander and dust from the air that’s circulating throughout your home. When it becomes clogged and dirty, it’s not going to be able to do its job.
The easiest way to check your air filter is to take it out and hold it up to the light. Can you see through it? If the answer is yes, you’re good. If you can’t see through it, it’s time to swap it out.
What a dirty air filter can do to your HVAC
If you forget to replace your filter, the HVAC motor is going to need to work a lot harder to push air through it. Not only is this going to cause the motor to work harder (which is going to put a lot of additional strain on your system), it’s going to lead to upticks in your monthly heating bill. No one wants to pay more for their electric bill than they have to!
Imagine what would happen if you tried to drive a car with a manual transmission, at 70 miles per hour, in first gear. How long do you think the car would last before the engine gave out?
Maintaining your furnace air filters is a key component of ensuring your HVAC lasts as long as possible.
